A penthouse apartment in the centre of metropolitan Berlin to be used as a ‘pied a terre’ for week long stays and large social gatherings.  We were engaged by the client from concept, with a brief to respect the architecture of the original Bauhaus building, whilst creating a comfortable and contemporary home. This was achieved by leaving raw finishes in key focal areas, such as exposed brick and the large central concrete lift shaft, which the apartment pivots around. By contrast we used a palette of rich colours and textures to achieve a multi layered and softer, living space. Maintaining a sense of simplicity was vital against the backdrop of contemporary Berlin. The client was keen to make the apartment a great entertaining space so we created a free flowing, open plan living area and had a bespoke mahogany table made which seats ten. We warmed up the kitchen with a large copper splashback to give texture and patina. The flat also needed to feel like a home and cosy enough for one or two people as well as for a large group, smaller and more intimate spaces were created to achieve this, including a snug and study zone as well as softer bedroom scenes.
